Controls Design Team Lead

Purpose: To successfully lead the controls and electrical team on projects from order through to completion. Manage the day to day planning, coordination and control of the company’s controls and electrical design operations ensuring quality, cost effectiveness and maximum efficiency levels are attained.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Planning/Project Management:

  • Gain a good understanding of customer needs / requirements for each project
  • Set technical direction for controls and electrical teams
    • Open Issues tracking & escalation
    • Assist engineers in problem solving
    • Identify skill gaps within the team and implement a continuous improvement programme.
  • Contribute to the resource planning process to assign controls and electrical engineers to projects based on workloads and technical suitability to build resource plans.
  • Monitoring progress/schedule compliance and taking/driving corrective actions where required
    • Liaison with Technical Director as required
    • Ensure a high standard of customer service is provided – balancing prioritisation of resource allocation between support work and projects
    • Manage team resource conflicts
    • Effective prioritisation and management of allocated hours
  • Co-ordination with mechanical, build & quality teams on schedules and planned work – manage conflicts
  • Ensure work is always flowing and not gated by any constraints (technical issues/customer issues/supplier issues/personnel issues)
  • Ensure change control compliance – all changes recorded, costed and communicated
  • Schedule internal project reviews as required
  • Review and support team members individual weekly planning
    • Work with engineers on task identification & scheduling in weekly planner and Wrike (project management software)
    • Review activities in Wrike to ensure data is up to date
  • Reporting on schedule adherence within the team to Operations Manager
  • Reporting on KPIs for projects and other status updates to Operations Manager

Team development and communications

  • Department weekly meetings
    • Discuss/communicate upcoming projects
    • Review group work loadings/schedules, open discussions on planning
    • Facilitate technical issue resolution/brain storming
    • Process improvements
  • Frequent (daily or bi-weekly) informal progress reviews with team – 1 to 1’s
  • Fortnightly 1-to-1 formal meetings with team members
  • Ensure team compliance with company work practices and quality system
    • Customer correspondence as per agreed schedule
    • Minute meetings
    • OI list updates
    • Change controls
  • Aiding personal development within the team
    • Identify training needs/courses
    • Developing soft skills
    • Developing technical skills
    • Challenge and motivate team to deliver
    • Promote awareness of new technologies/methodologies

General:

  • Build and maintain team structure to encourage knowledge sharing, mentoring and workplace supports to create ongoing project delivery improvements.
  • Build relationships across the company to ensure effective work practices
  • Contribute to company strategy.
  • Provide regular information and reports as required to the Operations Manager

  • Educated to degree level in an engineering discipline
  • Relevant experience working on machine control systems:
    • Ability to program one or more of AB Control Logix, Siemens S7, B&R or Beckhoff
    • Experience in an automated manufacturing environment
    • Familiar with configuring common machine networks & drive systems
    • Experience with robotics desirable (ABB, Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Epson)
    • Experience of machine vision desirable (Cognex, Keyence)
  • Willing to take ownership
  • Self-starter with good attention to detail
  • Project management experience advantageous
  • Proven track record in delivering solutions
  • Current driving license and able to travel as required
